The School of Life is a new social enterprise offering good ideas for everyday living. And what a great idea that is! As soon as you wander into their beautiful bookshop less than a stone's throw away from the Brunswick Centre you know you're in a bookshop that aims to inspire ideas and original thought.
Indeed, they've attempted to set out to provide their customers with all the essential books on all the great topics crucial to leading a good life. Their stock is a mix of high and low, new and old, predictable and astonishing. You’ll find it a perfect place to while away an hour finding inspiration or track down thoughtful and original gifts.
What we particularly like is that they organise our books not by genre but by problem. In their own words... "We know how frustrating it can be to wander through miles of bookshelves labelled "history" or "economics" or "crime", with no indication about which ones are actually worth reading. So instead we have created a kind of chemist for the mind, where you can find shelves such as “how to enjoy your own company”, “how to make a difference” or “how to survive insomnia”. You'll find no more than six books on any of our shelves, and we're pretty confident you'll enjoy every one of them."
They have a very impressive list of faculty members and ambassadors including Rosie Boycott, Alain de Botton, Mark Earls, Masoud Golsorkhi, Dominic Houlder, Brett Khar, Luke Johnson, Michael Morris, Toby Mundy, Martin Parr, Simon Prosser, Patrick Walsh, Lawrence Weschler.

First up, we thought they were very friendly enthusiastic people. This is something we always like to champion when we find it - the English aren't always known for their friendly customer service but it is here at The School of Life in bagloads. What we also like is their quirky list of classes and sermons - they address such questions as why work is often unfulfilling, how to be cool, why relationships can be so challenging, why it’s ever harder to stay calm and what one could do to try to change the world for the better. The School of Life is a place to step back and think intelligently about these and other concerns. And pick up a book! |
