Is the design of a book cover important?

Contrary to the popular saying, people do judge a book by its cover! Hundreds of thousands of new books are published every year which makes for a very competitive market. There is a science in designing striking, relevant book covers. We can help you with this or you might be able to find your own illustrator or designer who you can trust to provide you with a high quality book cover.

What are the different cover design options available to me when publishing with floreatbooks?

As part of our Indpendent Publishing Services we will provide you with a standard cover design. However, if you would like a more bespoke service check out our Bespoke Book Cover and Personalised Back Cover design options which will help your book really stand out.

Can I design the cover myself or have someone I know design it for me?

Yes, absolutely. Just supply us with the final image you want to use with a resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch) or above. If you are supplying your own, it should be in .pdf format and CMYK colour rather than RGB. The design needs to include the back, spine and front as one single item and should have a minimum of 3mm ‘bleed’ – a continuation of the background colour or design which is lost in the final trimming of the book – around the outside. Ensure that any images you use are either copyright free or you are the copryight holder yourself.

What resolution should images be?

As with all images for print, it should be a minimum of 300 dpi (dots per inch). If the resolution is less than this the image may appear grainy and unprofessional.

Can text or pictures be inside the cover itself?

Unfortunately not at the moment but we are working on this. Do ask us about this at the time of taking out a service with us and we'll let you know the latest developments!

Can I review my cover before it goes to print?

Absolutely. Just as with the main body of your book, you will get to review your book cover before the book goes to print.

Please note that when you approve the final draft cover you will be verifying that it is exactly as you wish it to appear in the published version of your book. This verification applies to all aspects of the design, formatting and content of the cover i.e. the text on the front, back and spine of the cover (including grammar, spelling and punctuation).

Please note that it’s possible for some colour variation to occur from the version of the cover that’s approved in galley form to that on the hard copy of the book and also from one print copy to another due to the method of printing in individual print runs.

Where's some information on the paper quality, some nice photos of finished books and printing costs?

We're currently working with a number of printers and are deciding which provides the best service and print quality. As soon as we've decided on our preferred provider we'll be updating the site with much more information on print costs as well as very detailed descriptions and photos of the paper quality, binding, covers etc. of all the different books we can produce. Thanks for your patience!
