The publishing industry can seem a bit daunting at first but if you arm yourself with the best information available you should be able to get your book out there for the world to read using a route to market that suits you best. To give you a head start, we've set out a brief summary of the two main ways to publish your book, namely Traditional Publishing and Independent Publishing. With "Independent" or "Self" publishing you are effectively becoming your own publisher. Think of it as a business - you will need to invest in the editing, copy-editing, printing, cover design and marketing with the aim of making your money back through sales that you will need to drive yourself. All of these services can be sourced independently or can be obtained from a good author services company. You need to set your budget, work out if you'll generate sufficient royalties, drive sales and distribution and be responsible for the creative and commercial success of your book. Or, if commercial success is not your aim, you can simply get your book in print for your friends and family.
Independent Publishing has been made possible by the development of "Print on Demand" (POD) technology which allows publishers and authors alike to have their books printed as they are ordered instead of having to arrange for expensive initial print runs. Authors choose to indie-publish for a variety of reasons: they may want to remain in complete control of their copyright and their royalty amount or perhaps they want to bring out their book quickly in order to help them promote their business. Our Independent Publishing services provide authors with the design, editing and printing services they need to indie-publish their book. If you choose one of our Independent Publishing services, your book will benefit from all of the following:

When people think of publishing, "traditional" or "commercial" publishing is probably what they have in mind; that the author has been published with a major publishing house such as Penguin or HarperCollins. The most viable way to getting a manuscript looked at by a Traditional Publisher is to first secure a Literary Agent who will, for a commission (usually 15 per cent.), try to sell your book on your behalf to a Traditional Publisher. If an editor at a Traditional Publisher likes your book, they will buy the rights to your book and then exploit those rights giving the author a specific royalty amount and advance in return.
The Traditional Publishing route to market is certainly the best if you can find a good agent and a good publisher who value your work. At Floreat Books we recommend all writers certainly try this route to market first - especially if you are writing fiction - as your book will invariably be all the better for expert editors who take a commercial and creative interest in the exploitation of your work. Traditional Publishers should also have well developed distribution networks and a sales team who has a direct relationship with each genre buyer at the leading bookstores. Furthermore, you don't need to pay anything and are a "published" author in the true sense of the word.
However, getting a Literary Agent and Traditional Publisher is not always easy. You must ensure your book is of a commercial publication standard (a good idea regardless of your route to market!) and also that you have the time to see the process out as getting a book to market by Traditional Publishing can take many months, even years. Luckily there are many great websites offering writers advice on securing a Traditional Publishing deal. We can also help you with this process by helping you submit your manuscript to Literary Agents (see our Book Development and Literary Agents Pack services) or improving the quality of your manuscript (see our Manuscript Editing and Manuscript Proof Reading services). Floreat Books also works with authors who have been traditionally published but would like to improve their own publicity as they are fairly down the list of priority on a Traditional Publisher's marketing budget (see our Marketing services). |
